Dhaka: The United Nations has expressed serious concern over the ongoing violence in Bangladesh targeting religious minorities. The unrest, particularly in Dhaka and other major cities, has escalated following the death of student leader Osman Hadi.
UN Secretary-General António Guterres’ spokesperson, Stéphane Dujarric, issued a statement emphasizing the need for the Bangladeshi government to ensure the safety of all citizens, regardless of religion. “We are deeply concerned about the situation in Bangladesh. Every citizen has the right to feel secure,” Dujarric said.
Targeting of Minorities
Violent protests and clashes have rocked several cities in Bangladesh since last week. One particularly shocking incident involved the mob killing of Hindu youth Deepu Chandradas, who was accused of blasphemy. Reports indicate that not only was Deepu murdered by a crowd, but his body was also set on fire, drawing international attention and outrage.
UN Calls for Action
Dujarric highlighted the urgent need for the interim government, led by Muhammad Yunus, to take steps to prevent such violence and protect minority communities. Volker Turk, UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, appealed to the Bangladeshi public to maintain peace and end the violence, stressing that a safe and peaceful environment is essential ahead of the February elections.
Global Concern
Lawmakers in the United States have also voiced concern over the targeting of Hindus in Bangladesh. Congressman Raja Krishnamurthy condemned the mob killing of Deepu Chandradas, stating he was “shocked” by the targeted attack. Congressman Suhas Subramanyam called the attacks on minority communities in Dhaka “deeply troubling.”
Ongoing Political Unrest
Bangladesh has been experiencing political turmoil for over a year, with protests intensifying since June-July last year. Analysts note that right-wing forces are clearly involved in these demonstrations, often targeting minorities and liberal-minded individuals, further escalating the country’s instability.
