Moscow/Washington: Russian President Vladimir Putin, who has ruled Russia for 25 years and cultivated an image of a formidable leader restoring Russia’s superpower status, has faced a significant blow to his reputation. On Wednesday morning, the U.S. Coast Guard seized the Russian-flagged oil tanker Marinera in the North Atlantic, some 4,000 kilometers from the U.S. coast, even as reports indicated a Russian nuclear submarine was stationed nearby.

According to American authorities, the tanker was transporting sanctioned oil from Venezuela, and its capture followed a court order. The vessel carried 28 crew members, including three Indian nationals, all of whom have been taken into U.S. custody.

Defense expert Sumit Ahlawat, writing in the Eurasian Times, suggested that the incident exposes Russia as a “paper tiger” when confronted with decisive U.S. military action. “If Putin ignores this provocation, it projects an image of weakness and indecision,” he noted. Analysts warn that any misstep could have repercussions for Russia’s ongoing conflict in Ukraine, where questions about the effectiveness of Russian military capabilities have persisted over the past four years.

Pressure for Retaliation Mounts in Moscow

Amid domestic criticism, Alexei Zhuravlev, First Deputy Chairman of Russia’s State Duma Defense Committee, publicly demanded military retaliation against the U.S. seizure. However, experts caution that options are limited: any conventional response risks direct confrontation with U.S. and NATO forces, while escalation could open a second front as Russia remains embroiled in Ukraine. Even pro-Russia bloggers acknowledge that beyond nuclear assets, Moscow lacks a strategic advantage over Washington in conventional warfare.

The U.S. Coast Guard emphasized that the seizure was carried out under legal authorization, targeting the vessel for transporting prohibited oil. While the tanker’s proximity to a nuclear submarine might have suggested potential Russian deterrence, the operation demonstrated that American forces can act decisively, even far from home shores.
