U.S.-China Tensions Erupt in Bangladesh on Election Day; Beijing Warns American Ambassador

Dhaka: On the day of Bangladesh’s parliamentary elections, tensions flared between the United States and China as Beijing issued a sharp warning to the American ambassador in Dhaka. A spokesperson for the Chinese Embassy in Bangladesh said that the embassy had expressed its “serious stance” regarding U.S. comments, accusing the American envoy of interfering in Bangladesh-China relations and spreading misunderstandings.

China’s Firm Response

The Chinese spokesperson emphasized that China’s ties with Bangladesh and other South Asian nations are not aimed at targeting any third party, nor will they be influenced by external powers. “Any attempt to interfere in or obstruct these relations will fail,” the spokesperson added. The statement comes as Mohammad Yunus expands defense ties with Beijing while an election in Bangladesh is underway.

China’s embassy also publicly shared the statement on its verified Facebook page, signaling Beijing’s intent to caution Washington. Analysts suggest that the warning is a reminder that post-election, when Yunus’s interim government ends and a newly elected administration—possibly led by Tarique Rahman—takes charge, Bangladesh’s foreign policy could see significant shifts.

Background: U.S. Concerns Over China in South Asia

The tensions were triggered after U.S. Ambassador Brent T. Christensen expressed concerns about China’s growing influence in South Asia. Speaking to a small group of journalists on January 21, Christensen said, “As I have stated during my hearing… I am concerned about China’s expanding footprint in South Asia. The U.S. government has been very clear on this issue.”

Christensen further stressed that he would continue engaging with both the interim and newly elected governments to ensure that any partnerships with China in certain areas are fully understood and evaluated.

Beijing’s Message

China’s Dhaka-based spokesperson responded, noting that such remarks stem from “ill intentions.” The statement emphasized mutual respect and support between China and Bangladesh, describing their bilateral cooperation as a positive example of friendly and mutually beneficial engagement.

As Bangladesh votes and results await, the confrontation underscores rising geopolitical tensions in South Asia, with Beijing keen to assert its influence while cautioning Washington against intervention in Dhaka’s affairs.
