Turkey Seeks Return of Russian S-400 Missiles, Erdogan Appeals to Putin; Eyes U.S. F-35 Jets

Ankara: Turkey is reportedly seeking to return the S-400 air defense systems it purchased from Russia nearly a decade ago, a move that could end a long-standing, controversial deal which strained its relations with the United States and other NATO allies. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan has reportedly raised the issue directly with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

If Russia agrees to take back the S-400 systems, it would resolve a major diplomatic stumbling block. The original purchase led to Turkey’s exclusion from the U.S.-led F-35 fighter jet program, as American officials expressed concerns that operating the Russian system could expose some of the stealth jet’s classified capabilities to Russian intelligence.

Discussions Between Leaders

According to sources familiar with the matter, Erdoğan brought up the S-400 issue with Putin last week during a meeting in Turkmenistan. While Turkish authorities have not officially confirmed the decision to return the systems, the discussions indicate Ankara’s intention to mend ties with its NATO allies. Turkey remains the only European country currently equipped with the Russian S-400 system.

Path to F-35 Acquisition

Experts suggest that returning the S-400 could pave the way for Turkey to finally acquire U.S. F-35 stealth fighter jets, a long-sought goal for Ankara. Before purchasing the S-400s, Turkey was an active participant in the F-35 program, contributing key components such as fuselages and landing gear. Turkish pilots were also undergoing training at Luke Air Force Base in Arizona. However, the acquisition of Russian missiles led Washington to remove Turkey from the F-35 program.

With renewed dialogue, Turkey could soon rejoin the international defense fold, restoring its position within NATO and unlocking access to advanced U.S. military technology.
