Trump’s Gaza “Board of Peace”: Asking $1 Billion from India to Pakistan for Membership

Washington: US President Donald Trump has announced a new initiative, the “Board of Peace,” aimed at overseeing reconstruction and stability in Gaza. As part of the plan, Trump has invited countries including India, Pakistan, and Turkey to join the board. However, membership comes with a hefty price tag—$1 billion (approximately ₹9,000 crore) per country.

The Board of Peace is a key element of the second phase of the ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hamas, facilitated under US mediation. According to a US official cited by CNN, countries seeking permanent seats on the board must make this contribution, which will largely fund infrastructure and reconstruction projects in Gaza rather than administrative or salary expenses typical of other international organizations.

Funding and Membership Rules

While the board is being established, initial membership does not require immediate payment. However, after the first three years, countries wishing to continue their participation will need to contribute the full $1 billion. The funds are intended exclusively for rebuilding Gaza, most of which has been devastated by two years of Israeli military operations.

Leadership and Global Participation

The board will be chaired by President Trump and include prominent global figures such as former British Prime Minister Tony Blair, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, and US Secretary of State Marco Rubio. Trump has described the board as the most prestigious initiative ever for Gaza, aiming to bring lasting peace to the region.

Notably, the Palestinian Authority currently has no representation on the board, though reports suggest that post-reforms, it could regain administrative control over Gaza.

Invitations to India and Pakistan

Trump has formally invited Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi to join the board, with the US Ambassador to India, Sergio Gore, sharing the invitation letter on social media. Similarly, Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has received an official invitation, confirmed by the Pakistani Foreign Ministry.

This ambitious initiative reflects Trump’s ongoing efforts to assert US influence in the Middle East while linking financial contributions from participating countries directly to the reconstruction and stability of conflict-affected Gaza.
