Trump Warns Iran of Severe Action if Protesters Are Executed

WASHINGTON: Amid ongoing protests in Iran, U.S. President Donald Trump has issued a stern warning to Tehran. Trump cautioned that if the Iranian government executes protesters, the United States will take “very strong” action, though he did not specify the nature of the response.

Iran has adopted a heavy-handed approach to suppress the nationwide demonstrations, with human rights groups reporting that thousands of people may have been killed by security forces. Iranian authorities have claimed that they have regained control after days of widespread protests across the country.

The unrest began on 28 December, triggered by rising inflation and a declining economy, and escalated into violent clashes by last Thursday night. The Iranian government shut down the internet and deployed large numbers of security personnel to contain the protests. Human rights organizations have accused the authorities of using lethal force and cutting off communication to conceal their actions. The internet blackout left Iranians largely cut off from the outside world for more than five days. Elon Musk’s Starlink service has since restored internet access for Iranian citizens.

Trump’s Direct Threat

Speaking to CBS News, Trump said that any executions of protesters would provoke a “very strong” U.S. response. Iranian authorities have indicated that those arrested during the protests could face charges of moharebeh—waging war against God—a crime punishable by death under Iranian law. Trump warned, “If they do this, we will act very strongly.”

In addition, Trump addressed the protesters directly, stating, “As they begin to kill thousands, and now you’re telling me about executions, we will see how that goes for them.” Previously, he had encouraged demonstrators to continue their protests, assuring them that help is on the way. Trump also announced via Truth Social that he has canceled all meetings with Iranian officials.
