Washington: Following a setback from the U.S. Supreme Court, former President Donald Trump has signed a new executive order imposing a 10% global tariff on all goods imported into the United States. The order came just hours after the Supreme Court declared Trump’s previous global tariffs illegal.
The new tariffs are effective immediately and apply to imports from every country. Trump announced the move on his social media platform, Truth Social, writing: “I am proud to have signed the global 10% tariff from the Oval Office. It will take effect almost immediately.” The White House also shared a screenshot highlighting the implementation of the tariff.
Supreme Court Ruling Sparks Strong Reaction
Earlier, the U.S. Supreme Court, in a 6-3 decision, ruled that Trump had misused his presidential powers under the 1977 International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA) to impose tariffs. Trump criticized the ruling, calling it “very bad” and accusing some justices of being influenced by foreign interests.
No Refunds for Previous Tariffs
Trump clarified that the new 10% tariff, imposed under Section 122, is in addition to existing normal tariffs. He indicated that higher charges are possible and suggested that refunds for the previously collected tariffs are unlikely, noting that legal challenges could continue for years.
Speaking to reporters, Trump said, “I am ashamed of some members of the Court. They lack the courage to do what’s right for our country.” He emphasized that the ruling has actually strengthened his position, stating that a President can now impose even more tariffs to protect the nation.
