Trump Signals Deal on Greenland, Military Access Without Full Takeover

US President Donald Trump has indicated that negotiations are underway to secure access to Greenland, suggesting a potential agreement with Europe that stops short of a full American takeover. The move comes after Trump repeatedly expressed interest in bringing the Arctic island under US control, citing strategic threats from China and Russia.

Speaking to Fox Business, Trump said, “We will have full access to Greenland—that means military access. We will be able to place whatever we need there because we want to. This is about national security and international security. Our relationship with Europe remains strong.”

Shift in Trump’s Approach

Previously, Trump had threatened military action to secure Greenland and even imposed tariffs on European countries that did not support the plan. However, during discussions at the World Economic Forum in Davos, he clarified that the US would not use force to take control. Observers note that his latest comments signal a softer approach, focusing on enhanced military presence and operational access rather than outright annexation.

Greenland’s Strategic Importance

Greenland is an autonomous territory under Denmark’s protection, and Trump has emphasized its strategic significance for national and international security. His earlier aggressive stance had drawn strong opposition from Denmark, Greenland, and other European nations, creating diplomatic tensions.

The proposed arrangement would allow the US to increase its military presence on the island, while Europe retains sovereignty. Analysts suggest that the deal could serve as a compromise to ease tensions, though details remain unclear. Trump’s changing position on Greenland has surprised European allies and reflects a pragmatic shift in his approach to Arctic strategy.
