US President Donald Trump revealed that Prime Minister Narendra Modi is not entirely pleased with him due to the tariffs imposed by the United States on India’s purchase of Russian oil. Trump stated that India had significantly reduced its oil trade with Russia as a result of the tariffs. He also discussed the delay in the delivery of Apache helicopters to India, which has been pending for five years.
Trump’s Remarks on Modi and Bilateral Relations
In a speech at the ‘House GOP Members Retreat,’ Trump shared insights into his relationship with Modi. He mentioned, “Prime Minister Modi and I have a very good relationship, but he’s not entirely happy with me because he has to pay a lot of tariffs.” Trump’s comments followed a conversation he recalled with Modi, where the Indian Prime Minister asked, “Mr. Trump, may I meet with you?” Trump replied affirmatively.
Oil Trade and Apache Helicopter Delays
Trump specifically pointed out the 50% tariff imposed on India, including a 25% tariff on Russian oil imports. He further revealed that India had been waiting for five years for the delivery of Apache helicopters. “We’re working on that,” Trump said, referring to the 68 Apache helicopters India had ordered.
Impact on India-US Relations
While the US-India relations have largely been positive, the tensions over tariffs and defense deals have highlighted some ongoing challenges in the bilateral relationship. The tariffs on Russian oil are a particularly sensitive issue for India, which has long-standing energy ties with Russia.
