Washington/Ottawa, January 24, 2026 – U.S. President Donald Trump has launched a new round of attacks on Canada following Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney’s recent speech at the World Economic Forum in Davos. Trump’s criticism focuses on Canada’s opposition to the ambitious Golden Dome missile defense project in Greenland and its economic engagement with China.
Trump Targets Canada Over Golden Dome
In a post on his Truth Social platform, Trump wrote, “Canada opposes the construction of the Golden Dome in Greenland, even though the project would protect Canada. Instead, they voted in favor of trading with China—a country that will devour them this year.” Trump also rescinded Carney’s invitation to join the U.S.-led Board of Peace, signaling growing tensions between the two neighbors.
The comments follow Prime Minister Carney’s visit to Beijing earlier this month, where he sought to restart economic relations with China, a move that has clearly irked Trump.
Security and Gratitude Dispute
Trump further criticized Canada for not showing sufficient gratitude to the United States, which he claimed provides “security and many other benefits for free.” He added, “Canada owes its survival to America. Next time you make a statement, remember that, Mark.”
In response, Carney, speaking in Quebec City, rejected the assertion. “Canada does not survive because of America. We advance because we are Canadians,” he said, defending Canada’s independent stance on security and foreign policy.
Carney’s Davos Speech
At the World Economic Forum, Carney had criticized the United States, stating that the era of American-dominated, rules-based order is ending. He warned that the narrative of a rules-based system was partly misleading, applying different rules for the powerful and the vulnerable.
Trump’s latest remarks underline the growing friction between Washington and Ottawa over security initiatives and international economic alignments, particularly concerning China and Arctic defense projects.
