Following the US attack on Venezuela, President Donald Trump has reignited his interest in acquiring Greenland, with discussions now underway within the White House on various options to secure the Arctic island. The possibility of using military force as part of the strategy has also been highlighted, according to a statement from the White House.
Greenland High on Trump’s Agenda
The US administration has confirmed that acquiring Greenland remains a priority on Trump’s agenda. The White House has emphasized that the growing strategic competition in the Arctic makes Greenland’s acquisition a national security priority for the United States. A Reuters statement quoted the White House as saying that military action is always a potential option in pursuit of this goal.
Greenland’s Rejection of US Ownership
Despite Trump’s continued interest, Greenland, an autonomous region of Denmark with a population of around 57,000, has firmly rejected becoming part of the United States. The island has previously made it clear that it is not for sale. However, Trump has not backed down from his pursuit, regularly reiterating his intentions to acquire the territory.
Greenland Seeks Dialogue With Denmark
In response to Trump’s renewed statements, Greenland’s administration has called for a meeting with the US Secretary of State, Mark Rubio, alongside Danish officials. Vivian Motzfeldt, Greenland’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, posted on Facebook that the meeting would focus on discussing the recent significant comments made by the US regarding the island.
Various Options on the Table for US
The White House stated that President Trump and his advisors are exploring several options for acquiring Greenland. One of the discussed possibilities includes purchasing the island outright or negotiating a Compact of Free Association (COFA) agreement. Such an agreement would allow Washington to exert significant influence over Greenland’s defense and foreign policy without the island formally becoming part of the United States.
Although the price of a potential acquisition has not been disclosed, sources indicated that discussions are ongoing in the Oval Office. Even with support for Greenland from NATO members, Trump’s interest remains undeterred. According to senior US officials, this issue is unlikely to fade and will likely continue to be pursued during the remaining years of Trump’s term.
