Trump Considers F-35 Fighter Jet Deal With Turkey Despite Israel’s Objections

Washington: U.S. President Donald Trump is reportedly considering supplying top-of-the-line F-35 fighter jets to Turkey, a move strongly opposed by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Despite Israel’s objections, Trump appears determined to push forward with the deal.

According to reports, Trump discussed the potential F-35 sale with Netanyahu during their meeting on Monday. When questioned about the deal, Trump said, “We are seriously considering it,” while downplaying concerns raised by Israel, adding that nothing adverse would occur as a result.

Trump Reassures Erdogan
Addressing tensions between Israel and Turkey, Trump referred to Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan as a “good friend” and suggested that existing disagreements would not pose any significant issues. Providing Turkey with modern fighter jets draws attention because U.S. policy has traditionally sought to maintain Israel’s regional military advantage.

Background of the F-35 Suspension
In 2019, the U.S. removed Turkey from the F-35 development program after Ankara purchased a missile defense system from Russia. This decision was meant to safeguard NATO interests and Israel’s regional security. However, in recent months, expectations have risen that Turkey may once again receive the advanced stealth jets, bolstering President Erdogan’s military capabilities.

Israel’s Concerns
Israel’s apprehension stems from the ongoing strategic rivalry with Turkey in the region, particularly over influence in Syria, where both nations have competing interests. Israeli policymakers argue that equipping Turkey with F-35 jets could tilt the balance in any potential regional conflict. Trump’s position, while welcomed by Ankara, has heightened Israeli concerns and could complicate U.S.-Israel relations.
