Washington: Former U.S. President Donald Trump has expressed strong condemnation following reports of an alleged drone attack on Russian President Vladimir Putin’s residence, reportedly carried out by Ukrainian forces. While Russia claims the attack took place, Ukraine has denied targeting Putin.
Trump, speaking ahead of a meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in Florida, said he was informed by Putin about the alleged incident. “President Putin called me to inform that there had been an attack on him. Such events should not happen. I am very angry about it,” Trump stated. He emphasized the distinction between attacking combatants and targeting someone’s home, adding, “Attacking those responsible is one thing; attacking their residence is another.” He also acknowledged the possibility that the claim may not be accurate.
Russia Accuses Ukraine
Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov alleged that Ukrainian drones attempted an attack on Putin’s residence in the Novgorod region on the nights of December 28–29. Lavrov stated that 91 drones were launched but were intercepted by Russian air defenses. He added that Russia has identified targets in Ukraine for potential retaliatory strikes.
Ukraine Denies Allegations
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky dismissed Russia’s claims as “fabricated” and intended to justify Russia’s own military actions. Zelensky emphasized that Ukraine does not take steps that could undermine diplomatic efforts, while accusing Russia of consistently trying to derail negotiations.
Ceasefire Efforts Continue
These statements come at a time when Trump is actively mediating between the two nations to achieve a ceasefire. He recently met with Zelensky in the U.S. and has spoken to Putin twice within 24 hours. Trump expressed optimism about ongoing discussions, stating that constructive conversations with both leaders give hope for improved relations.
