Trump Claims Iran Has Halted Executions Amid Protests

Washington/Tehran: U.S. President Donald Trump signaled a major shift in his approach toward Iran on Wednesday, claiming that Tehran has halted plans to execute anti-government protesters. Speaking to reporters at the White House, Trump said that “reliable sources” informed him that both killings and executions tied to the protests have been stopped.

The announcement marks a departure from Trump’s earlier stance, in which he had repeatedly threatened military action against Iran. Just a day earlier, he had urged Iranian protesters to continue their demonstrations, assuring them that support was on the way.

Protester Irfan Sultani Spared

Trump’s statement comes amid concerns for 26-year-old protester Irfan Sultani, who had been arrested during demonstrations and was reportedly facing execution. Late Wednesday, a Norway-based human rights group confirmed that Sultani’s death sentence had been postponed.

When asked about the source of his information, Trump stated it came from “very important sources on the other side,” adding that the White House had received “a very good statement from Iran.” He emphasized that the situation would continue to be monitored closely.

Iranian Foreign Minister Confirms Pause in Executions

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi also confirmed that no executions are planned for Wednesday or Thursday. In an interview with Fox News, he stated, “I can tell you with certainty that no executions are planned.” Araghchi acknowledged the violence during the protests but claimed it was instigated by Israeli interests and asserted that peace has now been restored in the country.
