WASHINGTON: U.S. President Donald Trump has once again claimed credit for preventing a full-scale war between India and Pakistan, asserting that his intervention saved millions of lives. Speaking Saturday, Trump said that his diplomatic efforts averted a potential nuclear conflict between the two neighbors and highlighted that Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif personally thanked him for helping reduce tensions.
Trump has repeatedly stated that he played a key role in stopping the military clashes that erupted between India and Pakistan in May last year. However, India has consistently rejected claims that any third-party country was involved in brokering the ceasefire, noting that the decision was made bilaterally between the countries’ military leadership.
Trump Highlights Peace Achievements
At a recent event, Trump said: “In one year, we’ve made eight peace deals. The Middle East is at peace. We stopped two nuclear countries, India and Pakistan, from fighting. The Prime Minister of Pakistan told me that Donald Trump saved at least 10 million lives. That was incredible.”
Background: The Military Clash
The conflict traces back to April 22, 2025, when a terrorist attack in Pahalgam killed 26 civilians. In response, India launched Operation Sindhur on May 7, targeting terrorist infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (POK), including key bases of Jaish-e-Mohammed and Lashkar-e-Taiba in Bahawalpur and Muridke.
Pakistan retaliated with drone and missile strikes, escalating the conflict. During the clashes, India reportedly targeted 11 Pakistani airbases, breaching Chinese air defense systems. On May 10, Pakistan’s Director General Military Operations (DGMO) contacted his Indian counterpart, initiating dialogue that led to a ceasefire agreement.
While Trump emphasizes his role in calming tensions, India has maintained that the ceasefire was the result of direct negotiations between Indian and Pakistani military officials, without external mediation.
