Washington: Three Indian nationals were among the crew members of a Russian tanker seized by the United States near the Venezuelan coast in the North Atlantic Ocean. The entire crew has been taken into US custody, and authorities have announced that criminal proceedings will be initiated against them in an American court. The majority of the crew comprises Ukrainian citizens.
The tanker, named Bela 1, previously known as Marinera, was reportedly involved in long-standing illegal activities, according to the US authorities. A US court had issued an order for the tanker’s seizure. Russia has called for the release of its citizens aboard the vessel.
Crew Nationalities
At the time of the seizure, the tanker had 28 crew members on board. According to Russia Today, the composition of the crew was as follows: 20 Ukrainians, six Georgians, two Russians, and three Indians. The ship’s captain is a Georgian national. Following the seizure, all crew members were taken into custody. US investigators are examining the tanker’s ownership, chartering arrangements, and compliance with maritime and international sanctions regulations.
Alleged Violation of Sanctions
The United States has alleged that the tanker was transporting oil from Venezuela and was attempting to circumvent existing international sanctions. The vessel had been chartered by a private trader. According to Washington, the tanker was “engaged in transporting Venezuela-linked oil in violation of international sanctions.” Reports indicate that prior to being stopped, the tanker operated under the name Bela 1 and had recently been renamed Marinera to evade US-imposed sanctions on Venezuela.
US to File Criminal Case
The US has confirmed that criminal charges will be filed against the crew of the Marinera. US Attorney General Pam Bondi stated on social media that US officials will take legal action against the crew members, who allegedly made multiple attempts to continue transporting banned oil from Venezuela and Iran.
Russia’s Response
The Russian Foreign Ministry issued a statement saying it is closely monitoring reports of US personnel boarding the vessel. Russia has requested that the United States ensure humane treatment of Russian nationals on board, respect their rights, and expedite their return home. The Russian Transport Ministry cited the 1982 UN Convention on the Law of the Sea, emphasizing that no country has the right to use force against ships registered under another nation’s jurisdiction.
