Dhaka: In Bangladesh’s 13th parliamentary elections, the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) secured a landslide victory, winning 211 out of 299 seats. The main opposition, Jamaat-e-Islami, managed 68 seats. Amid this sweeping win, only three Hindu candidates emerged victorious, all representing the BNP—a notable development at a time when minority rights and safety remain a major concern in Bangladesh.
Victorious Hindu Leaders
Goyeshwar Chandra Roy
Senior BNP leader Goyeshwar Chandra Roy won the Dhaka-3 constituency. A member of the party’s standing committee and a former state minister, Roy received 99,163 votes, defeating Jamaat-e-Islami candidate Mohammad Shaheenur Islam, who secured 83,264 votes.
Nitai Roy Chowdhury
Nitai Roy Chowdhury clinched the Magura-2 seat with ease, defeating Jamaat-e-Islami candidate Mustarshid Billah by over 30,000 votes. Chowdhury garnered 147,896 votes against Billah’s 117,018. Chowdhury and Goyeshwar Chandra Roy are relatives, strengthening BNP’s presence in constituencies with substantial minority populations.
Dipen Diwan
The third successful Hindu candidate, Advocate Dipen Diwan, won the Rangamati parliamentary seat. Diwan secured 31,222 votes, defeating independent candidate Pehl Chakma, who received 21,544 votes.
In addition to these three Hindu leaders, BNP also won the Bandarban seat with non-Hindu minority candidate Sachin Pru Jerry, representing the Chittagong Hill District, where the indigenous community forms a significant portion of the population.
These victories mark a significant moment for minority representation in Bangladesh’s parliament, reflecting both the political strength of BNP and the support from Hindu and indigenous communities during a highly sensitive electoral period.
