Tensions Rise for India as China Joins Teesta Project in Bangladesh

Dhaka: China’s involvement in Bangladesh’s Teesta River project is raising strategic concerns for India, particularly due to the project’s proximity to the Siliguri Corridor, also known as the “Chicken’s Neck,” which connects India’s northeastern states to the rest of the country.

Following the formation of the new government in Dhaka, China has intensified its engagement. Chinese Ambassador Yao Wen met with Bangladesh’s Foreign Minister Khalilur Rahman to express Beijing’s support for Prime Minister Tariq Rahman and his “Bangladesh First” policy. During the discussions, both sides addressed ways to strengthen bilateral relations, with the Teesta River Comprehensive Management and Restoration Project emerging as a key topic.

Ambassador Yao stated that talks on the Teesta project, which had been ongoing for years, are now set to move forward swiftly. He added that the discussions also included other significant issues, such as enhancing China-Bangladesh cooperation and addressing the Rohingya situation.

China Gains Preference Over India

Historically, India was given priority in the Teesta River project under Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. However, following her government’s fall, Mohammad Yunus opened the door for China’s participation. Now, under Tariq Rahman’s administration, indications suggest that China continues to enjoy preferential status over India for this project.

China’s participation in the Teesta project near the Siliguri Corridor poses a strategic challenge for India, given the corridor’s critical role in connecting the northeastern states. Beijing has assured Dhaka of full support for the project, with Ambassador Yao emphasizing the immediate implementation of the river management initiative. Many preliminary agreements had already been signed during Yunus’s tenure, setting the stage for accelerated collaboration.

The Chinese ambassador also highlighted plans for high-quality Belt and Road cooperation across multiple sectors, signaling Beijing’s intent to expand its influence in Bangladesh while potentially diminishing India’s strategic role in the region.
