Tensions Escalate on Durand Line: Afghanistan-Pakistan on Brink of War

In recent weeks, the Durand Line—the disputed border between Afghanistan and Pakistan—has witnessed escalating conflict, with frequent gunfire reported, particularly in Kurram and Nangarhar regions. Large-scale troop deployments and surveillance operations suggest that both countries could be on the verge of a full-scale confrontation.

Drone Strikes and Civilian Casualties
On the night between Monday and Tuesday, Pakistan carried out intense drone strikes targeting Afghanistan’s Khost, Paktika, and other provinces, resulting in at least 10 casualties, including nine children. Several others were injured in the attacks. Following the strikes, the Taliban issued a statement vowing retaliation in accordance with Islamic law. Taliban spokesperson Zabihullah Mujahid warned that Pakistan would face consequences for its actions.

Heavy Artillery Deployed on Both Sides
Reports indicate that both Afghanistan and Pakistan have positioned heavy artillery along frontline posts. According to sources cited by CNN-News18, rapid troop movements on both sides have raised concerns about the breakdown of the fragile ceasefire. The border has been placed on high alert, with strategic points such as Chaman-Spin Boldak, Angur Adda, Kurram-Nangarhar, and Torkham under intense surveillance. Emergency protocols have been activated, and additional forces have been deployed to prevent further escalation. Civilians have largely vacated the border areas due to heightened military activity.

Diplomatic Channels Strained
Diplomatic efforts to ease tensions have largely failed. Pakistan’s Defense Minister Khawaja Asif stated that Islamabad no longer holds expectations from the Taliban. With both nations heavily armed and the situation volatile, experts warn that a full-scale military clash could erupt at any moment. The international community is closely monitoring developments, as any conflict along the Durand Line could destabilize not only Afghanistan and Pakistan but also the broader South and Central Asian regions. Defense analysts have cautioned that without an immediate resumption of dialogue, the Durand Line could once again become a battleground for war.
