Tarique Rahman: Dhaka’s ‘Dark Prince’ Set to Become Bangladesh’s Next Prime Minister

Dhaka, February 13, 2026: Leading the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) to a sweeping victory, Tarique Rahman is poised to become the country’s next Prime Minister. Returning from 17 years in exile on December 25, 2025, Rahman immediately revitalized the BNP, securing wins in Dhaka-17 and Bogura-6. Unofficial results indicate BNP’s alliance has won 181 of the 300 contested parliamentary seats—well above the 151 needed for a majority—while the Jamaat-led coalition secured 61 seats and the Islamic Movement managed only one.

Who Is Tarique Rahman?

Tarique Rahman is the eldest son of former President General Ziaur Rahman and three-time Prime Minister Khaleda Zia. During BNP’s last tenure from 2001 to 2006, although Khaleda Zia held the official office, Rahman was widely regarded as the true power behind the party. U.S. diplomatic cables released by WikiLeaks in 2005 dubbed him the “Dark Prince” for his involvement in political maneuvering and alleged suppression of opposition.

After returning from London, Rahman assumed the position of BNP chairman following Khaleda Zia’s death and quickly consolidated leadership, proving his strategic and organizational acumen.

The ‘Shadow PMO’ Legacy

During BNP’s 2001–2006 tenure, Rahman operated from a building known as the “Shadow PMO,” a two-story office with a wind tunnel, effectively directing party operations and government affairs. His influence sparked both fear and admiration, as he became synonymous with the party’s authority and power.

Legal Battles and Exile

Rahman spent 17 months in detention under various charges, including money laundering and involvement in plots against Sheikh Hasina. Reports emerged of harsh treatment during his custody. Many cases against him, including those related to the 2024 student-led rebellion and alleged assassination plots, were later overturned, clearing the way for his political return.

BNP’s Election Triumph

Under Rahman’s leadership, BNP contested 292 seats directly, with the remainder shared among allies. Tarique Rahman’s decisive strategy and high-profile campaign energized the party, propelling it to a commanding parliamentary majority and marking the most significant political comeback in Bangladesh in nearly two decades.

As Rahman prepares to assume office, analysts note that his return marks the re-emergence of a formidable political force, one that combines experienced leadership, strategic acumen, and deep-rooted influence within the party and across Bangladesh.
