Kabul: The Taliban government in Afghanistan has declared its support for neighboring **** in the event of a U.S. military strike. Taliban spokesperson **** stated on Sunday that Kabul would assist Tehran if it requested help to defend against American aggression.
Speaking in an interview with Radio Iran’s Pashto service, Mujahid emphasized that Afghanistan would fully cooperate with Iran. He highlighted Iran’s victory in the 12-day conflict with Israel last June as a sign of the country’s resilience, adding that Iran would respond effectively to any potential U.S. attack.
Iran’s Right to Self-Defense
Mujahid clarified that the Taliban does not wish for a direct conflict between the U.S. and Iran. He urged that diplomatic channels and dialogue should be used to resolve tensions over Iran’s nuclear program. “We support negotiations, but we also recognize Iran’s right to defend itself against any attack,” he said.
Strategic Significance
The Taliban’s stance carries weight because Afghanistan shares a long border with Iran. Despite differences in sectarian ideology — Iran being predominantly Shia and the Taliban following Sunni beliefs — the Taliban’s support signals a significant diplomatic position. Relations between the two countries have historically been tense, particularly over Afghan refugees in Iran, yet Kabul has chosen to side with Tehran in the current crisis.
Rising Tensions Between Iran and the U.S.
Tensions between the U.S. and Iran have escalated since early 2026, following U.S. interference in Iranian protests and threats of military strikes. The U.S. deployed the aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln and guided missile destroyers to the Red Sea near Iran, intensifying the situation. Although nuclear negotiations have resumed, U.S. actions suggest the possibility of a major attack, keeping both sides on high alert.
Iran Also Gains Support from Houthi Rebels
Prior to the Taliban’s statement, Yemen’s Houthi rebels pledged support to Iran, threatening renewed attacks on vessels passing through the Red Sea corridor. These developments underline the growing regional backing for Iran in response to potential U.S. aggression.
