A strong earthquake struck the Oregon coast on Thursday morning, registering a magnitude of 6.2 on the Richter scale. The tremor’s epicenter was reported at a shallow depth of 10 kilometers, according to the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ).
Details of the Quake
The earthquake occurred approximately 295 kilometers west of Bandon, along the Pacific coastline, which stretches nearly 584 kilometers and is famous for its scenic beaches and tourist attractions. The tremors were felt across the region, including in Portland, but no significant damage or casualties have been reported so far. Residents in coastal areas likely felt light shaking.
Tsunami Concerns
Despite initial concerns, experts say a tsunami is unlikely. A storm chaser from British Columbia noted, “This region commonly experiences earthquakes and is not located in a subduction zone. Therefore, the likelihood of a tsunami is minimal.” The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) has not issued any tsunami warnings, and multiple reports on social media confirm that there is no immediate threat.
Current Status
Authorities continue to monitor the situation, but early indications suggest that the earthquake caused limited impact due to its shallow depth and location offshore. Residents are advised to remain cautious but there is no cause for alarm at this time.
