MADRID: In a tragic rail accident in southern Spain, at least 21 people have lost their lives and 73 others were injured after two high-speed trains collided near the town of Adamuz, close to Córdoba.
The incident occurred on Sunday evening when a high-speed train traveling from Málaga to Madrid derailed and veered onto an adjacent track, colliding with another train coming from Huelva to Madrid. Several coaches of both trains were severely damaged. Emergency responders quickly arrived at the scene to evacuate passengers.
Authorities Fear Death Toll May Rise
Andalusia’s Health Minister Antonio Sanz said that approximately 300 people were aboard the trains. He warned that the death toll could rise beyond 21. The injured have been transported to six different hospitals, with several in critical condition. Rescue operations are ongoing.
Local Community Steps In
Maria Belén Moya Rozas, head of regional civil protection, told Canal Sur that the accident occurred in a hard-to-reach area, complicating rescue efforts. However, local residents have assisted authorities by providing blankets, water, and helping evacuate passengers from the wreckage.
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen expressed her concern over the “horrific news” coming from Córdoba on social media.
The rail operator ADIF announced that train services between Madrid and Andalusian cities will remain suspended on Monday as investigations continue.
This accident is one of the deadliest recent rail disasters in Spain, highlighting concerns over railway safety in high-speed corridors.
