Islamabad/Mogadishu: Somalia is in talks with Pakistan to acquire 24 JF-17 fighter jets, marking the East African nation’s largest defense investment in decades. The deal, estimated at $900 million, comes as Somalia faces heightened regional tensions following Israel’s recognition of Somaliland in December 2025.
Strengthening Somalia’s Air Force
The JF-17 jets, co-developed by China and Pakistan, are sought by Somalia to modernize its air capabilities and strengthen defenses against insurgent threats, particularly from the Al-Shabaab terrorist group. Al-Shabaab, linked to Al-Qaeda, controls large rural areas in southern and central Somalia and frequently targets Mogadishu and surrounding urban centers.
A Somali defense official confirmed the ongoing talks, emphasizing that the purchase is aimed at safeguarding Somali airspace and reinforcing national sovereignty. “This acquisition is part of our efforts to rebuild state institutions and assert control over our territory,” the official said.
Geopolitical Implications
The deal underscores shifting alliances in the Horn of Africa. Somalia is increasingly leaning toward Saudi Arabia, which has close ties with Pakistan, while distancing itself from the UAE, a nation with strong relations with India and Israel.
The timing of the purchase is sensitive. Israel’s recognition of Somaliland, previously part of Somalia, escalated tensions in the region, provoking strong opposition from Mogadishu. The move has also complicated Somalia’s diplomatic landscape, as the nation navigates relationships with regional and global powers.
High-Level Visits to Islamabad
In February 2026, Somali Air Force Commander Mohammad Sheikh Ali visited Islamabad to advance discussions on the potential deal. The visit highlights Somalia’s intent to assert sovereignty over its airspace and bolster its defense capabilities in the face of domestic insurgencies and regional instability.
The proposed acquisition of JF-17 fighter jets represents a strategic step for Somalia, strengthening its military posture while navigating a complex geopolitical environment in the Horn of Africa.
