Washington, D.C.
In a terrifying incident captured on camera, a small aircraft crash-landed on Interstate-95 (I-95) near Cocoa, Florida, and collided with a moving Toyota Camry. The emergency landing, attempted due to an engine malfunction, occurred on Monday evening near Orlando, sending shockwaves among commuters and raising fresh concerns about aviation safety during in-flight mechanical failures.
According to Florida Highway Patrol, the Beechcraft-55 aircraft struck the rear of the Camry while descending onto the highway. The impact pushed the aircraft into a concrete barrier, where it finally came to a halt.
Driver Injured, Onlookers Rush for Rescue
The car’s driver, a 57-year-old Melbourne woman, sustained injuries in the crash. Eyewitnesses immediately rushed to her aid, pulling her from the damaged vehicle before emergency services arrived. She was transported to Viera Hospital for treatment.
Footage of the crash shows the aircraft gliding dangerously low over the interstate before slamming into the vehicle, resembling a scene straight out of a disaster movie. Witnesses say the accident could have resulted in far more severe casualties.
Pilot and Passenger Escape Unharmed
The 27-year-old pilot and his 27-year-old passenger escaped the crash without injuries. The aircraft belonged to Tailwinds Flying, Merritt Island, and was reportedly on an instructional training flight when both engines failed mid-air.
Highway Temporarily Shut Down
In the immediate aftermath of the crash, authorities shut down both northbound and southbound lanes of I-95, causing traffic disruptions in the area. The lanes were reopened shortly after the wreckage was secured and the area declared safe.
FAA and NTSB Launch Investigation
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) confirmed that the pilot had reported engine trouble shortly before attempting the emergency landing. The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) has also opened an investigation to determine the exact cause of engine failure and assess any potential mechanical negligence.
Officials stated that further details will emerge once the investigation is completed.
