Dhaka: Former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has sharply criticized the Muhammad Yunus-led interim government in Bangladesh following violent protests triggered by the killing of India-opposed leader Usman Hadi. Hasina accused Yunus’ administration of fostering extremism, stating that the anarchic conditions which toppled her government have multiplied under Yunus’ rule. In an email interview with ANI, she also raised concerns about attacks on minority communities and blamed Yunus for escalating tensions between India and Bangladesh.
Rising Anarchy Under Yunus
Addressing the murder of Usman Hadi, Hasina said, “This tragic killing reflects the chaos that once brought down my government. Under Yunus, such violence has increased manifold. His government either refuses to acknowledge it or lacks the capacity to stop it.” She added that these incidents are damaging Bangladesh’s relations with neighboring countries, with India closely observing the rise in unrest and persecution of minorities.
Extremists Influencing Governance
Hasina expressed alarm over the growing influence of extremist Islamic forces in Bangladesh. She alleged that Yunus had released convicted terrorists from prison and included extremists within his cabinet. “Yunus is not a seasoned politician and has no experience in running a country,” she said. She further criticized dangerous statements made under Yunus’ leadership regarding India’s Northeast and the Chicken’s Neck region, calling them irresponsible and provocative.
Bangladesh’s Situation a Regional Concern
Sheikh Hasina described the current state of Bangladesh as worrying not only for India but for all neighboring countries. “The secular character of Bangladesh was our greatest strength, and we cannot allow the whims of a few extremists to destroy it. Once legitimate governance is restored, such reckless actions will end,” she said.
Yunus Responsible for Strained India-Bangladesh Relations
Hasina blamed the Yunus administration for creating tensions with India through hostile statements and failing to protect religious minorities. “The Yunus government issues anti-India rhetoric and allows extremists to shape foreign policy. Yet, it expresses surprise when tensions escalate,” she said. Despite the current strain, Hasina expressed hope for the restoration of strong bilateral relations, stating, “I am confident that once legitimate governance is reinstated, Bangladesh will return to the wise partnership we built over 15 years.”
