Shahbaz Sharif and Asim Munir Set to Meet Donald Trump Again: What’s Brewing Between the US and Pakistan?

Islamabad/Washington: Pakistani Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif and Army Chief Asim Munir are scheduled to meet US President Donald Trump this week, potentially at the 56th Annual World Economic Forum (WEF) in Davos, Switzerland, which runs from 19–23 January. The meeting comes amid a period of warming relations between the two countries, following previous visits by Sharif and Munir to the United States last year.

WEF: A Platform for Strategic Talks

Shahbaz Sharif will travel to Davos on Monday with his delegation, accompanied by Army Chief Asim Munir. President Trump is expected to arrive on Tuesday, along with several senior US officials. Analysts say the talks could cover key regional security issues, including Afghanistan and the recently announced Gaza Board of Peace.

Security sources cited by News18 suggest that Munir has arranged strategic and security-focused meetings across Munich and Europe, although exact dates remain undisclosed. The WEF could therefore provide the ideal forum for high-level discussions between the US and Pakistan.

Improved US-Pakistan Ties

Since Trump assumed the presidency, US-Pakistan relations have seen notable improvement. Trump has publicly praised both Sharif and Munir on multiple occasions. Pakistan, in turn, has lauded Trump’s leadership and even nominated him for the Nobel Peace Prize.

Visa Ban Likely on the Agenda

A recent US decision to halt visa processing for 75 countries, including Pakistan, has stirred controversy in Islamabad. During the Davos meeting, it is expected that Sharif and Munir may raise this issue with President Trump. While no official agenda has been released, visa policy is likely to be a key topic of discussion alongside broader security and regional stability concerns.

As the global community watches closely, the upcoming US-Pakistan engagement could further shape the strategic landscape of South Asia.
