Washington, January 24:
A powerful winter storm has tightened its grip across large parts of the United States, triggering widespread travel disruptions and emergency measures in more than 15 states. Heavy snowfall, freezing rain and hail have forced the cancellation of over 8,000 flights nationwide, while nearly 140 million Americans are expected to be affected by extreme cold and hazardous conditions in the coming days.
Stretching from the Rocky Mountains to the East Coast, the storm system has brought blizzards, ice accumulation and dangerously low temperatures. Authorities have warned that the storm could cause extensive damage, disrupt daily life and pose serious risks to public safety.
States Declare Weather Emergency
In response to the worsening conditions, governors in more than a dozen states—from New Mexico to New England—have declared weather emergencies. The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued winter storm warnings across vast regions, cautioning residents about treacherous roads, power outages and limited visibility.
Meteorologists have also warned of a dangerous band of ice forming from eastern Texas to North Carolina, increasing the likelihood of road accidents and power line damage.
Heavy Snowfall Expected in Major Cities
By Friday night, parts of Texas were already experiencing freezing rain and hail. Weather officials said the storm is expected to move northeast after sweeping through southern states. Cities including Washington DC, New York and Boston could receive up to one foot of snowfall, significantly impacting weekend travel and daily activities.
Authorities have urged residents to stay indoors unless travel is absolutely necessary.
Massive Flight Disruptions
According to flight tracking website FlightAware, more than 3,400 flights were delayed or cancelled on Saturday, while over 5,000 additional flights were cancelled for Sunday, taking the total beyond 8,000.
Indian national carrier Air India has cancelled all flights operating to and from New York and Newark on January 25 and 26, advising passengers to check flight status and make alternate arrangements as needed.
Power Outage Concerns
Meanwhile, energy companies have begun preparing for potential power outages. Officials warned that heavy snow and ice-covered trees could collapse onto power lines, disrupting electricity supply across several regions.
Emergency services remain on high alert as the storm continues its advance, with authorities emphasizing preparedness and public safety amid one of the most severe winter weather events of the season.
