Residents in Israel’s Negev Desert felt sudden tremors on Thursday morning, raising speculation about a possible nuclear test. The tremors occurred near the region’s nuclear facility, intensifying concerns amid heightened regional tensions.
Earthquake or Nuclear Test?
The tremors struck around 9 a.m. local time as residents were going about their daily routines. Panic spread quickly, and alarms were triggered in some areas. The tremors registered 4.2 on the Richter scale and were felt up to 100 kilometers away. Experts noted that the duration and intensity were consistent with a small to medium-yield nuclear test, prompting speculation that Israel may have conducted a nuclear detonation.
The shocks were felt as far as northern Israel and areas north of Jerusalem. While minor seismic activity is not unusual in the region, the timing—coinciding with political tensions and protests in Iran—heightened public anxiety.
Proximity to Dimona Nuclear Facility
The tremors occurred near Israel’s Dimona nuclear facility. Commenting on the incident, U.S. mixed martial artist Jake Shields noted on social media, “Could this quake, right at the Dimona Nuclear Facility, be a warning to Trump to act quickly and fight his war?”
U.S. Threats Against Iran
The tremors come amid ongoing U.S.-Iran tensions. President Donald Trump has repeatedly accused Iran of killing protesters and has threatened military action. However, on Wednesday, Trump stated that he had been informed that executions in Iran had stopped. Iranian Foreign Minister later told Fox News that the government has no plans to carry out executions.
Iranian Protests Escalate
Protests that began in late December in Iran escalated sharply on January 8, becoming the largest demonstrations since the 1979 Iranian Revolution. Reports indicate that over 2,600 people were killed, though some estimates place the number as high as 12,000. Tehran has accused the U.S. and Israel of fomenting unrest in the country.
The Negev tremors, combined with the ongoing geopolitical tension, have intensified global speculation about Israel’s nuclear capabilities and the potential for a broader regional escalation.
