Russian Drone Strike on Ukrainian Energy Bus Kills 15 Workers Ahead of Peace Talks

Kyiv: A Russian drone attack on a bus carrying miners in Ukraine’s southeastern Dnipropetrovsk region has killed at least 15 people and injured seven others, Ukrainian officials confirmed. The attack occurred just hours after President Volodymyr Zelensky announced the second round of peace talks to end the ongoing conflict with Russia.

Regional military administration chief Alexander Ganjha said on Telegram that the drone targeted a shuttle bus belonging to an energy company, DTEK, as employees were finishing their shift. Ukraine’s Emergency Service reported that the attack caused a fire, further complicating rescue efforts. Initial reports had listed 12 fatalities, but the death toll later rose to 15.

DTEK CEO Maxim Tymchenko described the incident as a “deliberate terrorist attack on a civilian target.” The bus was near one of DTEK’s coal facilities when it was struck.

Peace Talks Scheduled Amid Ongoing Attacks

Zelensky announced that, with U.S. mediation, the next trilateral meeting between Ukraine, Russia, and the United States is scheduled for 4–5 February in Abu Dhabi to discuss conflict resolution. This follows the first trilateral discussion in late January in the UAE, which failed to reach a consensus. A major sticking point remains Moscow’s demand for Ukraine to cede territory in eastern Donetsk, which Kyiv has firmly rejected.

Despite ongoing U.S.-backed diplomatic efforts, Ukraine continues to face regular Russian aerial attacks, highlighting the fragile security situation even as negotiations are underway.
