Russia Deploys Deadliest Su-57 Stealth Fighters Near Japan: What’s Putin’s Strategy?

Moscow / Khabarovsk: Russia has begun deploying its Su-57 fifth-generation stealth fighter jets at the Dzyomgi Air Base near Japan, marking a significant upgrade in its Far East air capabilities. Reports indicate that at least 15 Su-57s have been stationed alongside existing Su-35S fighters and MiG-31BM interceptors. The deployment coincides with the delivery of new Su-57 production models from the nearby Komsomolsk-on-Amur Aircraft Plant, where serial production and final assembly of Su-35 and Su-57 jets take place.

Strategic Location and Training

Dzyomgi Air Base, near the Centralnaya Ugolovaya region, is considered one of Russia’s most sensitive air facilities. Stationing Su-57s here allows the new jets to operate alongside older Su-35 and MiG-31 units, providing essential air combat and stealth integration training. The MiG-31s, equipped with advanced sensors, can also serve as airborne command posts, coordinating operations for Su-57s in the region.

Message to Japan and U.S. Forces

Analysts suggest that the deployment could be a strategic message to Japan, especially as Prime Minister Sane Takaichi may strengthen Tokyo’s alliance with Washington. The Su-57s’ longer combat radius, nearly double that of U.S. F-35 and F-22 fighters, allows Russia to escort bombers and conduct reconnaissance missions near Japanese airspace, potentially extending to the Pacific and Alaska. While the Su-57 still faces limitations due to delays in the AL-51F next-generation engine development, its presence signals enhanced Russian aerial capabilities in the Far East.

Operational Role

The Su-57s will likely participate in reconnaissance, escort missions, and air combat exercises in coordination with Su-35 and MiG-31 units. This mixed deployment ensures that Russia can challenge American and allied air operations in the region while preparing its newest stealth jets for operational readiness under realistic combat conditions.
