Russia Calls Ties with Pakistan ‘Mutually Beneficial’; Putin Praises India’s Neighbor

MOSCOW: Russian President Vladimir Putin has described the country’s relationship with Pakistan as “mutually beneficial,” signaling a strengthening of ties with one of India’s key regional neighbors. The remarks came during a meeting with Pakistan’s newly appointed ambassador to Moscow, Faisal Niyaz Tirmizi, at a credential ceremony on Friday.

According to the Pakistani Embassy in Moscow, Putin emphasized Russia’s commitment to close cooperation with Pakistan, a full member of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO), which he described as the largest regional organization in terms of economic, technical, and humanitarian capacity.

Growing Bilateral Ties

Over the past five years, Pakistan and Russia have signed several agreements aimed at expanding barter trade, exploring new trade routes, and enhancing military cooperation. Both countries have shown interest in collaborating in areas such as energy, technology, agriculture, and transport.

Last year, Pakistani Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb revealed ongoing talks with Russia regarding potential oil-sector agreements. In May 2025, Pakistan and Russia agreed to establish a steel mill in Karachi to boost industrial cooperation. Additionally, the two countries are working on the Pakistan Stream Gas Pipeline, a major infrastructure project intended to transport imported gas from Karachi to Punjab, addressing Pakistan’s energy needs.

In 2023, Pakistan and Russia also discussed the delivery of Russian crude oil, though concerns over U.S. sanctions have so far prevented actual imports.

Economic and Industrial Collaboration

Russia has pledged support for major industrial projects, including reviving the Pakistan Steel Mill (PSM), signaling long-term investment intentions. The two countries have also established a bilateral economic commission, allowing officials to meet regularly to expand trade, energy, and other forms of cooperation.

Putin’s remarks highlight Russia’s strategic engagement with Pakistan while maintaining a careful balance in its relations with India, reinforcing Moscow’s role as a key player in South Asian geopolitics.
