Ramadan Begins in Saudi Arabia and UAE; India and Pakistan to Start Fasting on February 19

Riyadh: The holy month of Ramadan has begun in Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates (UAE), and other Gulf countries. The crescent moon was sighted on Tuesday evening, marking Wednesday, 18 February, as the first day of fasting in these countries. Afghanistan will also observe the first day of Ramadan on Wednesday.

India and Pakistan to Begin a Day Later

In India and Pakistan, the crescent is generally sighted a day after Gulf countries. Accordingly, the first day of fasting in both countries will be Thursday, 19 February 2026. In Oman and Turkey, where the moon was not sighted on Tuesday, Ramadan will also begin on Thursday.

Fasting Practices

During Ramadan, Muslims begin their day with Suhoor, a pre-dawn meal, and break their fast at Iftar, after sunset. Fasting involves abstaining from food and drink throughout the day.

Significance of Ramadan

Ramadan is the ninth month of the Islamic lunar calendar and begins with the sighting of the crescent moon. Because lunar sightings vary across regions, Ramadan does not start simultaneously worldwide. It is considered the most sacred month for Muslims, emphasizing spiritual reflection, prayer, and self-discipline.

Eid-ul-Fitr to Follow

With Ramadan starting on 19 February in India, Eid-ul-Fitr, also known as Sweet Eid, is expected to be celebrated on 20 or 21 March 2026. The festival of Eid is observed with great joy and enthusiasm among Muslims worldwide, marking the end of a month of fasting and devotion.
