Dhaka, Bangladesh: Tensions escalated in Bangladesh on Thursday as protesters marched toward the Indian Assistant High Commission in Rajshahi, raising anti-India slogans. Similar protests were reported in Dhaka the previous day.
Security Measures and Visa Center Closures
In response to the unrest, the Indian missions in Rajshahi and Khulna have temporarily closed their Visa Application Centers (IVACs). Bangladeshi security forces deployed barricades on the streets to prevent protesters from reaching the missions. The Dhaka IVAC, which was closed on Wednesday, has since reopened.
Wednesday’s Protests in Dhaka
On Wednesday, hundreds of demonstrators marched toward the Indian High Commission in Dhaka. The march, which began around 3 PM, was blocked by police barricades. Protesters clashed with security forces, breaking through the first barricade before being stopped by a larger contingent at the second barricade, where many staged a sit-in.
India Summons Bangladesh Envoy
India summoned Bangladesh High Commissioner Riaz Hamidullah on Wednesday to express strong concerns over the security threats posed by extremist elements near the Dhaka mission. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) issued a statement rejecting what it described as “false narratives being spread by extremist elements regarding recent incidents.”
The MEA noted, “It is unfortunate that the interim government has neither conducted a thorough investigation into these incidents nor shared any substantive evidence with India. We expect the interim government to ensure the safety of missions and offices in Bangladesh in line with its diplomatic obligations.”
Current Situation
The protests highlight growing security concerns for Indian diplomatic missions in Bangladesh. Authorities continue to monitor the situation closely to prevent further escalation, while the Indian High Commission remains on high alert.
