Tehran: Iran is witnessing its most intense wave of protests in recent years, which have rapidly spread across the country. Demonstrations against Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei escalated violently on Thursday night, with thousands of protesters taking to the streets in Tehran and other cities following a call by exiled Crown Prince Reza Pahlavi. The crowds were chanting slogans of “Freedom! Freedom!” and “Death to Khamenei!”
State TV Building Set Ablaze
Protesters targeted government properties, with one building of the Islamic Republic of Iran Broadcasting (IRIB) in Isfahan set on fire. Simultaneously, large crowds gathered on the streets of Bandar Abbas, a strategically important southern port city.
Government Shuts Down Internet and Communications
In response, the government led by President Masoud Pajeskhian imposed a nationwide internet shutdown and blocked international telephone calls from midnight. These measures highlight the regime’s fear of the protests, which continue despite heavy security deployment.
Economic Grievances Spark Political Movement
The demonstrations began on 28 December last year, initially fueled by rising inflation and a falling currency that worsened daily life. However, the protests quickly transformed into a political movement demanding regime change. Demonstrators are calling for the end of Khamenei’s rule and the restoration of a monarchy, with posters of exiled Crown Prince Reza Pahlavi spotted in several areas.
Violence and Human Rights Concerns
Protests have erupted in over 100 cities of varying sizes, involving different ethnic and social groups. Human rights organizations have accused Iranian security forces of using excessive force. A Norway-based NGO reported that at least 45 people, including eight minors, were killed by security forces on Thursday night, and more than 2,000 individuals were arrested.
Rights groups warn that these figures are likely underreported due to media restrictions, while the internet blackout has further limited communication. Meanwhile, U.S. President Donald Trump has issued a warning that the United States may respond with force if Iranian authorities continue to target protesters.
