
Moscow/New Delhi: Russian President Vladimir Putin is arriving in India on a two-day visit for the 23rd India–Russia Annual Summit. He will land in New Delhi on Thursday evening and hold a high-level bilateral meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, during which key defence and strategic agreements are expected to be finalised.
Ahead of his arrival, President Putin gave an exclusive interview to India Today, scheduled for broadcast Thursday evening. In the interview, Putin described India–Russia ties as a relationship built on deep trust, adding that he values India not merely as an economic partner but as a nation with which Russia shares strong personal and civilisational bonds.
Putin also expressed special happiness and enthusiasm about meeting Prime Minister Modi, highlighting the warmth and mutual respect between the two leaders.
Strengthening Strategic Partnership
The primary objective of Putin’s visit is to reinforce the strategic and economic partnership between the two nations. The world is closely watching this summit, particularly at a time when India’s relations with the United States have faced recent tensions. In this context, the Modi–Putin meeting carries significant geopolitical weight.
Putin will arrive in Delhi on Thursday evening and depart on Friday around 9:30 PM. He is accompanied by a high-level delegation comprising senior ministers, experts across various sectors, and a team of Russian journalists. Delegation-level talks will take place with Indian officials on multiple areas of cooperation.
Major Defence Announcements Expected
Defence cooperation remains the centerpiece of the summit. According to diplomatic sources, discussions will focus on:
- Advanced fighter jet procurement
- Enhancement of the S-400 air defence programme
- Possible dialogue on the next-generation S-500 air defence system
India, aiming to further strengthen its air power, is evaluating multiple fighter aircraft options, including Russian platforms. The summit may witness announcements that will significantly upgrade India’s air defence capabilities.
Trade, Technology, and Energy in Focus
Alongside defence, the two sides are expected to sign agreements in trade, energy, nuclear cooperation, and high-technology sectors. Russia’s delegation includes experts who will engage with Indian counterparts to deepen sector-specific collaboration.
