Pakistani Court Orders Protection for Indian Sikh Woman Who Married Muslim Man

Islamabad/Lahore: The Lahore High Court has issued a crucial order to protect Indian Sikh woman Sarabjeet Kaur and her Pakistani Muslim husband Nasir Hussain from any harassment or coercion. The court directed local authorities to immediately stop all forms of pressure or intimidation against the couple.

Sarabjeet Kaur, 48, had traveled to Pakistan earlier this month as part of a pilgrimage to celebrate Guru Nanak Dev Ji’s birth anniversary, joining a group of 2,000 Sikh devotees. While most pilgrims returned to India on 13 November, Kaur’s whereabouts remained unknown, causing concern in India.

Later, a video surfaced showing that Kaur had voluntarily embraced Islam during her visit and married Nasir Hussain the very next day, 4 November, in Sheikhupura, about 50 km from Lahore. The couple reportedly met via social media and had planned their marriage prior to her trip.

Court Intervenes After Police Harassment

According to a senior Lahore police officer, Kaur and Hussain faced pressure from local authorities at their Sheikhupura home in Farukabad, who allegedly tried to force them to annul their marriage. In response, the couple filed a petition in Lahore High Court seeking protection from undue police interference.

Justice Farooq Haider directed the police to cease all harassment immediately. In their petition, Kaur stated that a police officer had improperly pressured them to divorce. She also clarified that her husband is a Pakistani citizen and that they had been coordinating with the Indian mission regarding her visa extension and citizenship matters.

Sarabjeet further revealed in a video shared on social media that she had known Hussain for over nine years through Facebook and that their decision to marry was entirely voluntary.

This ruling reinforces the right of adults to choose their partners freely and ensures legal protection against coercion and societal pressure in interfaith marriages.
