Pakistan expressed its anger at the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) on Monday, targeting India over last year’s Operation Sindur. Pakistani officials accused India of violating international law and questioned its military conduct, while also raising concerns over Kashmir and the Indus Water Treaty.
Speaking at the UNSC, Pakistan’s Permanent Representative Asim Iftikhar Ahmed demanded that the council uphold international law. “Last May, India launched an attack without any military provocation, violating both international law and Pakistan’s sovereignty,” Ahmed said. He emphasized that respect for international norms is the only legitimate framework governing relations between states.
Kashmir Dispute Highlighted
Ahmed repeatedly addressed the Kashmir issue, accusing India of violating Security Council resolutions and calling it a threat to lasting peace. He urged the international community to ensure that the Kashmir dispute is resolved in accordance with UN directives.
Pakistan frequently raises Kashmir at international forums to appeal to domestic hardliners, but the ground reality tells a different story. Pakistan-administered Kashmir (POK) has witnessed escalating unrest over the past year, including large-scale protests against Pakistani control.
Indus Water Treaty Controversy
In addition to Kashmir, Ahmed criticized India’s suspension of the Indus Water Treaty. Following the Pahalgam attack last April, India halted certain treaty obligations, prompting Pakistan to label the move as a violation of international law. “By doing so, India has disregarded its international responsibilities,” Ahmed said, emphasizing Pakistan’s stance that water and other critical natural resources must not be used as instruments of coercion.
