Pakistan Navy and Chinese Defense Officials in Bangladesh Ahead of Major Arms Deal

Dhaka: A major defense deal is reportedly in the works in Bangladesh, involving the purchase and supply of advanced military equipment. Officials from the Pakistan Navy and China’s NORINCO defense company are currently in the Bangladeshi capital Dhaka, signaling potential strategic collaboration ahead of the upcoming elections.

The Pakistani delegation, led by Commodore Nasir Mahmood, consists of 13 members from the Navy. Simultaneously, a Chinese team from North Industries Group Corporation Limited (NORINCO) is also present in Dhaka, led by Ding Weimin, General Manager for Asia-Pacific operations. Both delegations arrived in Dhaka on 1 February.

According to reports, Bangladesh’s interim government, under Chief Advisor Mohammad Yunus, is aiming to finalize defense agreements with Pakistan and China before elections, scheduled to take place in eight days. The talks primarily focus on defense cooperation, procurement of weapons, and technical specifications for spare parts.

In addition to the Pakistan and China delegations, representatives from South Africa and Nigeria—Commander Jabulani Donal Mashamba and Lieutenant Commander Ikenna Stephen Chima—are also participating as “friendly nation” delegates in the 55th Pakistan Navy Staff Course in Dhaka.

The Chinese team reportedly held discussions on 3 February to finalize payment terms and draft agreements for arms purchases, although the results of these negotiations are yet to be disclosed. Bangladesh is modernizing its armored forces under its Forces Goal-2030 program and heavily relies on NORINCO for advanced equipment.

Recently, Bangladesh has acquired several Chinese tanks, including VT-4A1 MBTs, VT5 light tanks, and upgraded Type 59G/69IIG tanks. It has also entered agreements to procure the SY-400 guided missile system and Sky Dragon 100 air defense system to enhance its military capabilities.
