Pakistan’s recent 27th Constitutional Amendment, which significantly increases military powers at the expense of the judiciary and civilian government, has drawn international attention. The law is widely seen as enhancing the influence of Army Chief Asim Munir, particularly if he assumes the newly created position of Chief of Defence Forces (CDF).
However, political maneuvering behind the scenes suggests the path may not be straightforward. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and his brother, former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, are reportedly strategizing to curb Munir’s rise, potentially blocking him from taking on the CDF role or even removing him from his current position as Army Chief.
Power Play in Islamabad
Following recent by-elections, the ruling PML-N (Shehbaz Sharif’s party) has strengthened its political position. Observers suggest the Sharif family aims to prevent Munir from becoming Pakistan’s most powerful figure, fearing that unchecked military authority could undermine civilian governance. Nawaz Sharif, known as one of Pakistan’s shrewdest politicians, is reportedly guiding these moves.
Media reports indicate that Nawaz Sharif has warned Shehbaz Sharif that allowing Munir to become CDF could reduce the Prime Minister to a ceremonial role, unable to make meaningful decisions independently, effectively turning him into Munir’s puppet.
Potential Political Fallout
Some reports also speculate that the Sharif family could push for legislation in the National Assembly to not only block Munir’s CDF appointment but also potentially remove him from his current post. Amid rumors of former Prime Minister Imran Khan’s death in custody, Munir has come under scrutiny, creating an environment ripe for political maneuvering.
Why the Debate Emerged
The order to appoint Asim Munir as the country’s first CDF was supposed to be issued by November 29, 2025. As of December 1, the notification has not been released, with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif reportedly distancing himself from the process. Munir’s three-year term as Army Chief officially ended on November 29, leaving his position technically vacant.
As Pakistan watches closely, the coming days will reveal whether Munir assumes the CDF post or if the Sharif family successfully curtails his authority, deepening the country’s political and military crisis.
