Islamabad: In a sudden political development, Pakistani President Asif Ali Zardari has convened an emergency session of both houses of Parliament on December 2, reportedly citing national security concerns. The move comes amid heightened tensions over internal political issues, cross-border operations, and rising security threats in Balochistan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, who was abroad, returned urgently to Islamabad on Monday night. Reports suggest that the emergency session will address Pakistan-Afghanistan relations, security operations along the border, and potential imposition of presidential rule in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, where Imran Khan’s Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party currently holds power.
Field Marshal Asim Munir Plays Key Role
Top intelligence sources indicate that Field Marshal Asim Munir is believed to have influenced Zardari in calling the session. According to CNN-News18, Munir and Zardari are reportedly planning a new command structure to strengthen federal control over Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and prevent embarrassment to the military from Taliban-related developments.
Officials suggest that Sharif’s sudden return, along with the notification regarding Munir, is part of a coordinated effort to manage political and security developments. Parliament is expected to provide formal approval for these measures, including discussions on presidential rule in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, military deployments in Gaza, and U.S. mineral deals.
Strategic Objectives Against PTI
Sources indicate that the session will strategize the framework for governance once presidential rule is imposed in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. Additionally, a notification concerning the Chief of Defence Forces may be issued within the next 24 hours. Shehbaz Sharif aims to use the parliamentary process to avoid political controversy while removing PTI from power in the province.
The move also comes amid recent international scrutiny of Imran Khan, including questions raised by the United Nations regarding his health and political standing. Pakistan’s military is reportedly linking the imposition of presidential rule with ongoing disputes involving Afghanistan, signaling a calculated approach to secure strategic and political objectives.
