Munich: Pakistan’s Army Chief,, met with U.S. Secretary of State during the Munich Security Conference, discussing key issues including the deployment of Pakistani forces to Gaza and broader regional security concerns involving India and the Taliban.
In an official statement, the Pakistani military said that the meeting focused on global and regional security dynamics. During the conference, U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations, highlighted the role of Pakistan in multilateral diplomacy and referred to the recent nuclear tensions between India and Pakistan over Kashmir, underlining Pakistan’s contribution to global and regional stability.
Addressing Strategic Stability in South Asia
Waltz expressed concern over South Asia, noting: “We have faced an extremely serious nuclear tension involving Kashmir, India, and Pakistan. We must act together worldwide to maintain strategic stability.” He emphasized Pakistan’s participation in multilateral forums, including the Board of Peace, which has been established by the UN Security Council to address issues such as Gaza. Waltz also acknowledged Pakistan’s engagement with other Muslim-majority countries, including Turkey and Indonesia.
The Gaza Factor
Indonesia recently announced the deployment of 8,000 troops to Gaza. Pakistan, while part of the Board of Peace, has so far maintained silence on sending forces, reflecting domestic sensitivities. The Pakistani government hopes to use its position to maintain U.S. goodwill and gain strategic leverage concerning India. Prime Minister has already signed agreements under the Board of Peace framework, and Washington reportedly expects Pakistan to contribute troops.
Taliban and Regional Security Issues
Analysts note that during the meeting, Asim Munir also raised Pakistan’s concerns with the Taliban, including ongoing attacks by the TTP and Baloch insurgents. Pakistan has repeatedly accused Afghanistan and India of supporting these groups without providing evidence, seeking U.S. pressure on the Taliban to curb insurgent activities.
The meeting underscores Pakistan’s dual objective: maintaining strong ties with the U.S. while addressing domestic and regional security challenges, particularly in the context of Gaza and South Asian strategic stability.
