Washington: The United States has implemented new travel and immigration rules for Green Card holders, which officially came into effect on 26 December 2025. Issued by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), these regulations apply to both new applicants and existing permanent residents, making it crucial for Indians living in the U.S. or planning to travel there to understand the changes.
The revised rules allow U.S. authorities to conduct enhanced screening at borders, including biometric identification such as photographs, fingerprints, and iris scans. Certain nationalities will face additional scrutiny, as part of the Trump administration’s efforts to strengthen national security and modernize border management using advanced technology.
What Has Changed at U.S. Borders?
According to Newsweek, under the new system, federal authorities can monitor the international travel of all non-U.S. citizens, including legal permanent residents. Green Card holders from 19 specific countries considered security risks will face closer examination. While India is not listed among these 19 countries, two of its neighbors, Myanmar and Afghanistan, are included.
The most significant change is the full implementation of the Biometric Entry-Exit System. Now, all non-U.S. citizens will have their photographs taken each time they enter or exit the country, covering airports, land borders, and seaports. U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officers may also collect fingerprints and iris scans.
Implications for Green Card Holders
For Green Card holders, these rules mean that every entry or exit to the U.S. could involve photographs, fingerprints, or iris scans, potentially leading to longer questioning at borders. Officers may inquire extensively about travel history, residence, or documentation.
Experts advise Green Card holders to take extra precautions under the new rules. Keeping all documents updated and readily available is crucial, along with staying informed about travel regulations, as immigration officers may ask stricter and more detailed questions.
