Jerusalem/Washington: Tensions in the Middle East escalated as the US aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln reached the region, raising concerns of a potential strike against Iran. Amid this development, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu issued a direct warning to Tehran.
Speaking at a press conference, Netanyahu stated, “If Iran makes the mistake of attacking Israel, we will respond with a force the likes of which Iran has never seen before.” He emphasized that any assault on Israel would be met with overwhelming retaliation. Netanyahu also referenced remarks by US President Donald Trump, who has warned Iran in recent days, signaling close coordination between the two allies.
US-Iran Standoff
On Monday, Trump told Axios that while the US possesses a massive fleet in the region, he believes dialogue with Iran is still possible. Meanwhile, Tehran has reiterated its readiness to confront any threat, warning that any attack on Iran could destabilize the entire region.
In parallel, Iranian President Masoud Pejeshkian held a phone conversation with Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, criticizing US threats as attempts to undermine regional security, according to AFP.
A Reminder of Last Year’s Conflict
Netanyahu’s warning recalls the small but intense military clash between Israel and Iran last June. During that confrontation, Israel struck multiple Iranian military sites, reportedly killing senior commanders and nuclear scientists. Iran retaliated by launching ballistic missiles at Israeli cities, causing significant damage. The conflict later drew in the US, whose bombers targeted Iran’s key nuclear facilities, reportedly delaying its nuclear program by several years. Experts, however, suggest that Iran may have preemptively moved significant quantities of uranium to secure locations before the strikes.
