Nepal’s Former PM Prachanda Meets India’s Ajit Doval Ahead of Crucial Elections

Kathmandu/New Delhi: Ahead of Nepal’s upcoming general elections, former Prime Minister and senior political leader Pushpa Kamal Dahal Prachanda held a high-profile meeting with India’s National Security Advisor Ajit Doval. The meeting, which took place on Sunday, January 4, in Delhi, underscores India’s active interest in supporting democratic processes and political stability in its northern neighbor.

According to Nepali media reports, Prachanda attended the meeting along with his daughter Ganga Dahal. The discussions focused on the upcoming elections scheduled for March 5, emphasizing that conducting timely elections is essential to safeguard Nepal’s democracy, especially after the recent Gen Z protests that led to the collapse of KP Sharma Oli’s government. Interim Prime Minister Sushil Karki is currently overseeing the administration.

Doval’s Emphasis on Democratic Stability

CNN-News18 reports that the meeting centered on India’s stance that free and fair elections are the key to resolving Nepal’s political crisis. Doval reportedly highlighted that elections are not just a procedural necessity but also crucial for maintaining national stability. He reassured Prachanda that India remains fully committed to protecting Nepal’s democratic framework and sees the electoral process as the most effective means to secure a democratic majority and sustain political continuity in the country.

Prachanda Affirms Internal Consensus

Prachanda assured Doval that there is broad internal consensus among Nepali political parties regarding the elections. He confirmed that no major party is opposing the electoral process, signaling a cooperative environment for a smooth transition. Prior to his India visit, Prachanda had held consultations with KP Sharma Oli and other political leaders in Nepal, indicating that his engagement with Indian leadership was informed by internal political deliberations.

Emerging Political Contours in Nepal

The political landscape in Nepal is seeing fresh dynamics with Balen Shah, the Mayor of Kathmandu, expected to contest as a candidate representing Gen Z forces. His entry poses a significant challenge to the prime ministerial aspirations of both Oli and Prachanda. Meanwhile, there is also growing discourse within the country about restoring the monarchy, adding another layer of complexity to the upcoming elections.

India’s proactive engagement through Doval highlights the strategic importance New Delhi places on Nepal’s political stability and democratic continuity, reinforcing the message that regional stability hinges on Nepal successfully navigating its electoral process.
