
Moscow: A massive fire broke out Wednesday evening at one of the largest markets in St. Petersburg, Russia, sending thick plumes of smoke into the sky and causing panic in the Nevsky district. The Ministry of Emergency Situations confirmed that the blaze has claimed the life of one person, while several others sustained injuries.
Explosions Reported at the Scene
Eyewitnesses reported hearing multiple explosions as flames engulfed the market complex. Videos from the scene show towering fireballs and dense smoke rising above the city, highlighting the severity of the inferno.
Casualties and Injuries
According to local media reports, at least two people have been injured. A 52-year-old woman suffered carbon monoxide poisoning, while another individual jumped from the second floor to escape the flames and was seriously hurt. Emergency services responded immediately, deploying rescue operations to save those trapped inside.
Firefighting Efforts
Approximately 30 fire engines were dispatched to the site, supported by 96 personnel and 26 specialized firefighting units. Due to the heavy smoke, authorities had to close nearby roads, including Iskrovsky Prospect, to ensure public safety. Firefighters are working tirelessly to contain the blaze and prevent further damage.
Investigation Underway
The Prosecutor’s Office in Nevsky district has launched an investigation to determine the cause of the fire. Officials have not yet confirmed whether the blaze was accidental or due to any security lapse that allowed it to spread rapidly. Authorities are also assessing the full damage to this historic market building, whose future now remains uncertain.
