Washington: Following India’s landmark trade agreement with the European Union, U.S. President Donald Trump announced a major trade deal with India, easing tensions and lowering tariffs. In a surprising turn, Senator Lindsey Graham, who had previously threatened India with tariffs of up to 500 percent, has now praised Trump’s initiative.
Graham lauded the U.S.-India trade deal, which reduced American tariffs on Indian goods from 50 percent to 18 percent, calling it a “remarkable step.” He highlighted that this move could pressure Russia and influence other countries that continue to support Russian military operations.
On his social media post, Graham stated:
“President Trump has done an excellent job. His message about ending the war in Ukraine is working. It is forcing countries that support Russia’s war machinery to rethink their stance.”
He added:
“India’s approach helped secure this tariff reduction. I hope other major countries purchasing Russian oil will follow India’s path. Only when Russia feels the pain will Putin come to the negotiating table. India’s action brings us closer to that goal. Russia must end the bloodshed in Ukraine.”
A Sharp Reversal from Last Year
Last year, Graham had taken a hardline stance against India, advocating tariffs as high as 500 percent over India’s continued energy imports from Russia. He even labeled India as a country supporting Russia’s war efforts in Ukraine.
