Japan Will Act if U.S. Faces Crisis in Taiwan, Says Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi

Japan’s Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi has issued a firm warning that her government will take necessary action to protect its citizens if a major crisis erupts in Taiwan. Speaking on Monday, Takaichi emphasized that Japan regards Taiwan as an issue with significant implications for its security alliance with the United States.

“If a crisis occurs in Taiwan and U.S. forces are attacked, Japan will intervene,” Takaichi said. “Failing to act would weaken the security partnership between Tokyo and Washington.” Her remarks come amid increasing indications from China of potential control measures over Taiwan, heightening fears of a military confrontation.

Joint Operations with the U.S.

During a televised discussion on TV Asahi, Takaichi spoke about the possibility of a joint operation with the U.S. to evacuate Japanese citizens from Taiwan if needed. She stressed that any failure to act in such a situation could jeopardize Japan’s security alliance with the United States.

In the event of an emergency triggered by military action, Takaichi said Japan would assess the situation carefully and respond within the framework of existing laws, ensuring the safety of both Japanese and American citizens.

Escalating Japan-China Tensions

Takaichi’s statements have once again raised tensions between Japan and China. In November 2025, she had warned the Japanese parliament that Chinese blockades or military operations against Taiwan could threaten Japan’s national security, emphasizing that Tokyo must remain prepared.

China strongly condemned her remarks, leading to a diplomatic dispute. Despite pressure from Beijing to retract her comments, Takaichi reaffirmed in December 2025 that Japan’s stance on Taiwan has remained unchanged since 1972, though she indicated she would avoid making such statements in parliament. Her latest declaration signals a renewed firm stance by Tokyo on the Taiwan issue.
