Tel Aviv: Israel has officially deployed the world’s first operational high-power laser air defense system, the Iron Beam, marking a historic milestone in modern military technology. Developed by Rafael Advanced Defense Systems, the Iron Beam has been integrated into the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) and is designed to complement existing defense layers such as the Iron Dome, David’s Sling, and Arrow systems.
Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz called the deployment a “game-changer” for the nation’s air defense, emphasizing that the system is precise, cost-effective, and capable of neutralizing threats that traditional defense systems struggle against, including rockets, mortars, drones, and swarm attacks. Katz added, “Iron Beam sends a clear message to our enemies: Do not test Israel’s resolve. Our technological edge and commitment to protect our citizens have never been stronger.”
How Iron Beam Works
Iron Beam uses a high-energy laser to detect, track, and destroy short-range threats. The system operates in the following sequence:
- Incoming threats such as drones, rockets, or mortars are first tracked using radar and electro-optical sensors.
- The system calculates the threat’s speed, direction, and altitude in real-time and locks onto the target with high precision.
- A 100-kilowatt high-energy laser beam is focused into a narrow, concentrated stream aimed directly at the incoming projectile.
- Unlike explosive intercepts, the laser heats the target continuously for a few seconds, melting its structure, disabling sensors, and igniting fuel, causing the drone or rocket to lose control and fall.
- Iron Beam can rapidly switch between multiple targets, making it highly effective against drone swarms.
The system requires electricity only for operation, making it extremely low-cost per interception compared to traditional missile systems.
Proven in Combat
Although officially deployed now, Iron Beam has already seen combat. During clashes along Israel’s northern border in October 2024, the system successfully intercepted at least 40 drones and rockets launched by Hezbollah.
Rafael stated on social media platform X:
“Today marks the beginning of a new era in air defense. Iron Beam has been officially handed over to the IDF as the world’s first operational high-power laser interceptor. It has proven itself in extensive trials, successfully neutralizing rockets, mortars, and UAVs. Integrated into Israel’s multi-layered defense system, Iron Beam is more than a technological achievement—it fundamentally changes the defense equation with unmatched precision, efficiency, and minimal cost. Welcome to the laser age.”
Iron Beam is expected to redefine modern air defense, providing Israel with a robust, cost-effective, and technologically advanced solution to emerging aerial threats.
