Tel Aviv: Israel has delivered a setback to Pakistan’s ambitions in Gaza, announcing that Islamabad will not be allowed to play any executive role in the peace process despite being invited to participate in U.S. President Donald Trump’s Board of Peace initiative. India-based Israeli Ambassador Reuven Azar, in an exclusive interview with TOI, emphasized that “although Pakistan was invited to join the Board of Peace, it will have no on-ground role in Gaza.”
Pakistan’s Involvement in the Peace Process
Pakistan is among several Islamic countries that have expressed interest in Trump’s initiative to end the conflict in Gaza. However, Pakistan does not formally recognize Israel, which has consistently opposed its involvement. Islamabad has also expressed interest in contributing to an International Stabilization Force (ISF) for Gaza, though no official commitment has yet been made. In December 2025, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio acknowledged Pakistan’s willingness to engage with the ISF.
Ties Between Hamas and Pakistani Terror Groups
Ambassador Azar highlighted concerns over increasing contacts between Palestinian terrorist group Hamas and Pakistani terrorist organizations accused of attacks on India. He noted that Israel is closely monitoring movements and communications between Hamas representatives and militant elements in Pakistan and Bangladesh, relying on open-source intelligence. While exact activities are unclear, the trend is concerning.
Azar also referenced the Pahalgam attack, noting the brutal violence inflicted on civilians by terrorists and citing the October 7 Hamas attack on Israel as a reminder of ongoing threats. He emphasized that India and Israel are collaborating to develop capabilities to counter such security challenges.
India’s Strategic Role in West Asia
The Israeli envoy pointed out India’s growing influence in promoting peace and stability in West Asia. “India is one of the fastest-growing powers globally,” he said. “Its economy is expanding rapidly, and through multiple trade agreements over the past 18 months, it is opening up to the world.” Azar suggested that India could provide workforce, infrastructure expertise, and participate in regional development projects, benefiting all parties involved in the region’s stability.
